Diastasis Recti
Definition
A separation of the abdominal muscles that leaves a gap down the middle of the belly. It is most common during and after pregnancy, as the growing uterus stretches the abdominal wall and the hormone relaxin softens connective tissue, and it can also come from doing abdominal exercises or lifting weights the wrong way. It usually does not need surgery: core rehabilitation that strengthens the deep core muscles can help close the gap. Family Chiropractic in Ramsey, NJ, includes diastasis recti in its care after childbirth.
